Auerbach - Church St. Pankratius und Margaretha interior
Bavaria

Church of St. Pancratius and Margaretha

When the predecessors of today's Auerbach church were built, we do not know. The sources are silent in the Middle Ages and early modern times. It was only in the 17th century that more detailed knowledge of construction activity could be gained. In 1767 the dilapidated old tower was demolished and replaced by a new one. In the years 1769/70 the long house of the church was torn off and the 9 x 7.50 meter choir was built. The immediate further construction of the 18-meter-long planned church ship could not be started at first because the funds were not used. It was only in the years 1781-82 that the church was ready to be built in what is now standing before us.

The Baroque organ treasures with the original pipes originally came from the monastery church in Niederalteich and was brought to Auerbach shortly after 1800, at the request of a priest Englmayr. This organ, which was extensively renovated and extended in the years 1983/84, is the oldest, still playable organ from this time in our diocese.

The history of the parish of Auerbach: Even though the church in our parish dates back to 1781, the history of Christianity is still far behind in our town: by the year 765, a mention of the old Urbach can be traced back. Our area was probably populated between 600 and 900. And the very first little church of the whole region was built in the year 788 by the monks of Niederalteich. At the beginning of its history, the Urpfarrei Auerbach (especially URPAH = the brook on which the Auerochsen were grazing) was very extensive: it encompassed the territory of today's parish of Lalling and stretched far north to the 1029 landlocked secluded Rinchnach monastery area. When this parish was founded as a branch of Niederalteich in 1012 (from the holy Gunther, who also had his Klause there), a connecting path to the mother monastery, the so - called Gunthersteig, crossed our parish via Auerbach, Berging, Mapferding and Vorderherberg Rohrstetten further to Rinchnach and in addition a connection to the GOLDENENSTEIG (connection Passau - Bohemia).

It was not until 1149 that Lalling was mentioned as a branch of the monastery parishioner Auerbach, and the co-operative (= chaplain) appeared from Auerbach to Lalling only in 1610. In 1717, Lalling was separated from Auerbach as a separate parish. This first separation was followed by more, until today's parishrements were reached.

In 2006, the branch church Loh was added, which was first for many years at the parish of Schwanenkirchen.

More About Bavaria

The “Free State of Bavaria” is renowned for being culturally unique and for the emphasis which it places on preserving its heritage and traditions. It is also extraordinarily beautiful, boasting a plethora of castles, palaces, cathedrals, abbeys and monasteries not to mention spectacular scenery. Bavaria is more than Alps, men in “lederhosen” (leather pants), women in “dirndl” (traditional dresses) and frothy glasses of beer by the “maβ” (liter).
