The Beechworth Prison (or Beechworth Gaol) was built in 1856 during the gold rush era. In his early life, Ned Kelly did time here for a charge of receiving a stolen horse, before being transferred to Pentridge Prison. Beechworth Prison remained a working prison until 2004. Today it is open to visitors.
