Mrs. Franklin grave
Nevada

This out of place grave is located just off of Highway 50 at Mount Airy Summit west of Austin, Nevada.  On it is a cross along with the name Mrs. Franklin 1869 etched in crude fashion with her exact date of death being April 9.  There is not much information on her first name, however she died near what was a former Overland Stage station called Mount Airy, the ruins of it lying in close proximity.  An old newspaper excerpt uploaded on findagrave.com regarding her grave reads the following:

Died of small-pox.  At 3 o'clock this morning, as we learned from Dr. Chamblin, the wife of Mr. Franklin died of small-pox at Mount Airey, sixteen miles from this city.  Mr. Franklin is the keeper of a station at that point, and his wife contracted the fatal disease from a man who stopped at the house while on his way to this city.  There appears to be ground for believing that this man suspected he had the small-pox before he reached Mount Airey, but he concealed the fact from the inmates and remained with them over night.  He came to this city and went to a lodging-house, when the fact of his disease was discovered and he was taken to the small-pox hospital.  When Mr. Franklin learned his condition of his visitor he wrote to Dr. Chamblin of this city for vaccine matter, who promptly sent it with instructions for its application.  Mrs. Franklin and her two little children were vaccinated.  The virus was well developed in the children, but four days after its application to the mother the fatal disease appeared which terminated her life this morning.  Mr. Franklin is left with two small children of a tender age.  We have mentioned these details to show the melancholy result of that selfishness which impelled the subject of a loathsome contagious disease to imperil the lives of individuals and communities rather than expose himself to slight inconvenience.  The acts of this conscious lazar will be regarded as criminal, and if we knew his name we should publish it to point a moral. - Reese River Reveille, 5th.
