Mokoia Island lies in the Lake Rotorua. Once Tūtānekai lived on that island. Hinemoa was not allowed to travel across the lake by canoe to meet her lover. So she swam across the lake – more than 3 kilometres. She followed the sound of Tūtānekais flute. This is one of the most famous and romantic legends of the Maori.
