Nantes (Naunnt ou Nàntt en gallo, Naoned en breton) est une commune française de l'ouest de la France. Chef-lieu du département de la Loire-Atlantique et préfecture de région des Pays de la Loire, elle est la ville centre de la communauté urbaine Nantes Métropole. Ses habitants sont appelés les Nantais.

Ville d'art et d'histoire , Nantes était anciennement l'une des capitales du duché de Bretagne dont elle abrite toujours le château des ducs de Bretagne, témoignant de son passé breton.
Avec 282 853 habitants en janvier 2006, elle est la sixième commune la plus peuplée de France  ; elle a été l’une des huit métropoles d'équilibre désignées par l’État en 1963. Nantes est ainsi l'une des plus importantes Métropole du Grand Ouest et occupe une place prépondérante sur la façade Atlantique. À cet égard, elle joue un rôle majeur dans le commerce maritime français.
