The ruins of Clun Castle, Shropshire
England

Located in the Shropshire town of Clun, close to the English - Welsh border, Clun Castle is a Norman motte and bailey fortification built soon after the Norman Conquest. The sparse ruins sit high on extensive earthworks. The stone keep is unusual in that it sits at the side of the mound, rather than on top.

In its prime, it was owned by the Fitzalan family, who also established Arundel Castle, which became their main residence. Although subjected to several attacks by the Welsh over time, it was damage caused during the English Civil War that caused it to fall into ruin.
