Val di Mello in Val Masino
Lombardia

The origin of the name is to be found in the village of Mello, a municipality not contiguous to the valley, as it is located about 20 km further west, on the Céch Coast, whose inhabitants (melat) since past centuries have the right to graze in this Valley.

The Val di Mello starts from the village of San Martino and ends against the group of Mount Disgrazia, precisely against its forerunner or Monte Pioda, even if the summit of Mount Disgrazia is visible beyond the watershed crest. The left orographic side of the Val di Mello, which is roughly oriented from west to east, is therefore exposed to the north and shady and is characterized by short and very steep valleys, very wild and not very frequented by hikers and climbers. The opposite side, in full sun, instead has some large secondary valleys, starting from the head the Cameraccio valley, the Torrone valley, the Zocca valley, the Qualido valley and the Ferro valley, characterized by stupendous rocky walls, spectacular morainic cirques and plateaus alternating with jumps crossed by waterfalls. Currently the glacial phenomena are very reduced at the upper end of the cirques and the small remaining glaciers, with some exceptions, are little more than perennial snowfields.
