Many of different towers (church towers, castle towers, industrial towers etc.) are an inherent part of the Zabrze panorama. That is the reason why Zabrze is sometimes called "the city of brick towers". One of them is the water tower located on Zamoyskiego St. (former Vinzentstrasse), which is one of the symbols of Zabrze. It was erected in 1911 according to a design of an architect August Kind and a royal building councilor Friedrich Loose. It was built to improve the water supply to nearby towns (Zaborze, Zabrze, Sośnica, Maciejów, Makoszowy).
The tower is 46 m high and has an unique form and construction - it's an octagonal brick building, and at the top it has a large dome made of steel construction supported by one massive central core and eight pillars around. In the central core there was a staircase with 135 steps, linking the dome with the lower part of the tower. The stained-glass windows of the technical storey suspended to the bottom of the dome, were very impressive and interesting.
In the dome there was a water tank, and in the lower three-storey-building there were living quarters and office rooms.
The tower functioned until 1985, later it was used just only as living quarters. Due to technical condition, since 1995 it has been abandoned.
Unfortunately, although there were plans to convert the tower into a museum, a hotel or a residential building, this unique monument and one of the icons of the city is still not used and decays.
