Zhenhai Tower 1, Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou
Guangdong Province

Zhenhai Tower is located in Yuexiu Park in the centre of Guangzhou. Yuexiu Park is the largest park in down town Guangzhou, covering an area of 860,000 square meters (212.5 acres). It is made up of three artificial lakes, and seven mountains, all part of Yue Xiu Mountain. Zhenhai Tower, also known locally as the Five-Story Tower, is one of the landmarks of the city. Historical record has it that Zhu Liangzu, Yongjia Marquis of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), saw yellow and purple smoke rising over Yuexiu Mountain and was told by a Taoist monk that it was the omen of a new emperor. To overcome this omen, Zhu Liangzu ordered this tower to be built, that was in 1380. Over the past  600 years, the tower has been destroyed five times and re-built. Now it is home of the Guangzhou Museum, housing relics and documents showing Guangzhou's history over 2000 years. The tower is 28 meters (91.9feet) high and 16 meters (52.5 feet) wide. In the grounds are many iron and bronze cannon from the Qing Dynasty (1644 to 1912). Through out the park and all over Guangzhou are many of the Bombax trees or more commonly known as Red Silk Cotton Tree, in full bloom and a sure sign it is spring. The park is easily accessed from the Guangzhou Metro Line 2.
