Belmonte, Church of Santiago, Pantheon of Cabral family
Portugal

Confirming the importance of the Cabral family in Belmonte, their pantheon emerges. This space was designed to receive the graves of some of the most illustrious members of the Cabral clan. Located in the northern part, attached to the central body of the church almost as a duplication of the primitive church, the pantheon chapel appears, which was built by Fernão Alvares and his wife, Isabel Gouveia in the second half of the century. XV, possibly in the year 1483.

Its interior space is simple, being rhythmic by an elevation of the floor (where you can read Porto do Carneiro 1630) in the center, the modern tomb granite ark containing part of Pedro Alvares Cabral's ashes (ashes taken from the tomb found in the Graça Church in Santarém) and four arches - two with late medieval features and the other two, already from 1630.

In the tomb on the right, next to the connecting door with the church, is the tomb Fernão Cabral and ISabel Gouveia (founders of this pantheon). Opposite this archesolio, there is another one that contains the remains of João de Gouveia, his wife Leonor Gonçalves and his son, Vasco Fernandes Gouveia (Isabel Gouveia's parents and brother).

In 1630, this architectural space suffered intervention at the behest of Francisco Cabral, being attributed to him, the renovation of the exterior of late-mannerist features of the façade, where it can be read in the very damaged inscription. THIS CHAPEL MANDOV FAZER / FERNÃO CABRAL THE P OF THIS NAME AND S / OF THE CASA DE BEL IN THE ANNP OF 148 AND FR CABRAL S OF THE SAME HOUSE MANDOU RE / FORCAR IN THE YEAR OF 1630

We also have to assign Francisco Cabral the order for the execution of the two late Mannerist tomb arks, where we can still see the following inscription today. THIS TOMB WILL BE TRES / LADADOS FERNÃO CABRAL O P E NUNO FR CABRAL THE 2nd Lords OF THE HOUSE / BELMTO BY FRCO CABRAL / YEAR 1630
