Botoșani, Romania was first mentioned in 1439. Several notable Romanians originate here including Mihai Eminescu.
Like in many areas of Europe, there was a WWII battle here with a large number of Soviet troops buried in a special area of the town cemetery.
The town was 53% Jewish at the start of the war and is now less than 1% Jewish.
