Braga, Bom Jesus do Monte, Stairway of Virtues, Fountain of Faith
Portugal

Dated 1837, consisting of a staircase along the lines of the Five Senses. The first source, the Faith, bears the inscription "Living waters will flow from it". Allegories are made to Docility and Confession. The second source is that of Hope, with Noah's ark beneath which the water falls: «Ark in which ... souls were saved». Here we are referring to Trust and Glory. Finally, the source of Charity, symbolized by a statue of a woman with two children in her arms: "There are three virtues ... the greatest of them, however, is charity". The water gushes from the heart of one of the children and the allegories are made for Benignity and Peace. At the end of the staircase we can still see two chapels outside those of the Way of the Cross, but no less impressive: that of Saint Peter and that of the apparition of Christ to Mary Magdalene. Here is another suggestive inscription: "Maria chose the best part, which will not be taken away". For us, the best part is undoubtedly reaching the gardens that complete the staircase and being able to rest, still admiring the chapels of Jesus' Elevation and Resurrection. The temple that stands in front of us is huge ... behind it was Braga, the «city where you pray». The first Fountain, the Faith, bears the inscription "Living waters will flow from it". Allegories are made to Docility and Confession.
