绩溪县位于安徽省东南部，东与浙江省临安市交界；西与黄山区（原太平县）、歙县、旌德县接壤；北与宁国市、旌德县毗邻。绩溪县地理位置优越，是徽文化的核心区域。
绩溪地形地貌为含有中山的低山丘陵山区，西部为黄山支脉，东部为西天目山支脉，主要山峰均在千米以上，县域为长江水系和钱塘江水系的分水岭。境内大鄣、大会、大獒三山鼎立，从东北向西南，从西北向东南倾斜。东部的清凉峰海拔1787.4米，是绩溪的最高处；南端的江村环海拔125米，是绩溪的低谷。徽岭山脉綿亘中部，将县境分为岭南、岭北，两地的语言和风俗也有很大不同。
县内河流交错，沟谷纵横，两千米以上的天然河流136条，总长831千米。主要河道登源河长55千米，扬之河、大源河各长40千米，三河流域面积582.5平方千米，占全县总面积的52.6%。此外，戈溪、黄石坑、徽水、大鄣、卓溪等河皆长15千米。北流之水属长江水系；南流、东流之水属钱塘江水系。绩溪森林覆盖率达75.4%。
