Das Datum, Bauherr und Motiv des ersten Burgenbaus in Diez sind nicht überliefert. Es wird vermutet, dass die Burg bereits im Jahr 790 existierte. Diese Jahreszahl steht für die Ersterwähnung des Ortes. Von dieser Anlage sind heute nur noch die Fundamente des Hauptturms vorhanden. Der Bergfried und das Palas entstanden in der zweiten Hälfte des 11. Jahrhunderts durch die Grafen von Diez. Unter den Grafen von Nassau wurde die Burg zu einem Fürstenschloss der Früh-Renaissance umgestaltet.
