The Fongshan River and its tributary Caogong Canal flows through the old Fongshan City at a length of 20 km, and has driven the development of Fongshan area. The upstream flows through Fongshan City and converges with the downstream at Cianjhen Dist. all the way into the Port of Kaohsiung. However, household and industrial sewage collected at the basin had kept residents away from this metropolitan river. In 2003 the Kaohsiung City Government initiated a five-phase dredging project. The project included land recovery, river water quality treatment, dredging, transfer of riverbank occupants, and landscape improvement. Now, along with historical sites in the neighborhood, the Fongshan River basin has become a waterfront living environment for citizens.
