Griffiths island at the mouth of the Moyne River was named after John Griffiths who purchased the island in 1835. Early in the 19th century a whaling station was established on the island but not long after Port Fairy became a major point of entry for immigrants and trade.
Today, Port Fairy is a scenic coastal town 289 kilometres west of Melbourne and slowly recovering populations of southern right whales visiting this stretch of coast during the winter months have become a popular tourist attraction.

Victoria is Australia's second smallest State and covers only 3% of Australia's land area but has the second highest population of all States and Territories. Victoria's mainland and islands have a total length of 2,512 kilometres coastline which is about 4.2% of Australia's 59,736 kilometres of coastline.
