Red sandstone and dark volcanic rock layers make for some striking scenery at the Gunlock State Park, just south of the town of Gunlock, Utah and 15 minutes north of St. George, Utah. The jumble of red rock contrasts with the near flat layer of basalt that caps the bluffs along the road.
In wet years, the water tumbles from the spillway of Gunlock Reservoir above us and down this narrow sandstone gorge at our feet. Based on my visit, I don't think 2014 will be one of those wet years, at least in terms of runoff from snow melt.
