The lighthouse was erected in 1843, and at that time it housed the most powerful beacon in the world. Today it is still Denmark's most powerful lighthouse lamp. The top og the lighthouse, which is sixty-five meters above sea level ad therefore Denmarks highest, affords a panoramic view over the sea and the whole area.

Opposite the lighthouse is the smal towerless church, Hansted Kirke, from the 12th century.
