The city of Limerick (Luimneach) lies on the shores of the river Shannon. The original core of the city was located on the King’s Island protected by King John’s Castle. The Cathedral of St. Mary is a cathedral of the Church of Ireland. It was founded in 1168. The tower dates from the 14th century. The arches and doorways of the church are built in Romanesque style while the windows are built in Gothic style. Like some other churches in Ireland this cathedral suffered from abuse through the troups of Oliver Cromwell.
