Noudar Castle
Extremadura
About 8 miles from Barrancos, the ruins of the old village of Noudar still display the ancient castle. Its tall keep, square-shaped and crowned by defensive battlements, is visible from far away. At the second floor, reached by stone stairs, there is a water reservoir. The fortress, close to the keep, displays another ancestral process of storing water: the 15th-century cistern, with arches supporting the vault. In front of the Castelo de Noudar there is a strategic observation point. The hillock of São Gião (or São Ginês), where once thieves and prisioners were punished and hanged, is now an excellent viewpoint to admire the rough and isolated scenery.
