Sarkamen archeological site

Sarkamen - "The youngest Ancient Roman Palace in the world"

 

Archaeological site known as Vrelo Šarkamen, is spanning an area of 25 hectares on slopes of Deli Jovan mountain, near village of Sarkamen in Eastern Serbia

 

It is an Roman resident/memorial complex with a mausoleum.

It was built during the tetrarchy (early 4th century). The complex was discovered by Serbian archeologist Dragoslav Srejović during 1990's.

The mausoleum is dated to 293-311,and is dedicated to the mother of Emperor Maximinus Daia, who was born nearby.

In summer of 1996 notable amount of imperial gold jewelry, including a golden ring of the Emperor's mother has been found in side of the mausoleum.
