Se Catedral, Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, Santarem
Portugal

It was built in the area belonging to the walled complex of Santarém, specifically next to the port of Leiria. The space was occupied by the Royal Palace, but D. João IV made his donation to the Jesuits, for the construction of a Temple. The façade consists of five bodies sectioned by tall pilasters, with floors torn by windows and niches housing images of the Company's greatest saints (Francisco Xavier, Inácio de Loyola, Luís Gonzaga and Francisco de Borja).

The Church of the invocation of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, initially of the priests of the Society of Jesus and, after 1780, of the Patriarchal Seminary of Santarém, is one of the most important and beautiful sacred monuments of the Scalabitan heritage.

It is a building with a #Mannerist structure and facade, built between 1672 and 1711. The frontispiece of the church has five distinct bodies, giving a strong impression of strength and power. Impression of power that is enhanced and complemented with the two symmetrical parts of the built complex, forming as one and great palace of God.

The interior of the temple of a single nave has eight side chapels, where the splendor and richness of the #barroco dazzles us, in sharp contrast to the sobriety of the frontispiece. The ceiling of the nave, of prospective painting, from 1728 with the iconography of the ascension of Our Lady, Jesuit figures and allegories to the parts of the world then known.

The beautiful ceiling of the Capela-Mor is the work, in an architectural perspective, of the Scalabitan painter Luís Gonçalves de Sena, executed in 1754 and which complements the enchantment that all the interior decoration transmits to us.
