Shackleton's Nimrod hut
Antarctica

This hut was errected in February 1908 as the base for Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod expedition. Fifteen men lived in this hut. Although small, it is well designed and is situated in a valley sheltered from the Antarctic winds. On this expedition Shackleton got within 180km of the South Geographic Pole but had to turn back. He discovered the Beardmore Glacier as a route up to the polar plateau, which Scott later used to reach the pole.
