Shihtou Temple, Tianliao
Taiwan

During the construction of National Freeway No. 3, the contractor went bankrupt; consequently, the Thai workers recruited by the contractor suffered financial difficulties and had no money to return to their country. With the kind assistance from Master Shih Tian Hua, abbot of Wuji Cihsyuan Shengtian Temple, who obtained the support from Haiming Temple in Mituo and its believers indirectly through the news media with help from the Tianliao Police Station, these Thai workers were able to exchange labor for enough money to return home within the prescribed two-year period. As a way of reciprocating, each of the workers used a stone to create the prototype of Shihtou Temple. Later, volunteers such as Jhan, Guo-Hua completed the internal decoration using rocks and seashells. The construction took approximately 12 years to complete. The touching story of Thai workers repaying the master’s kindness by building a temple received news coverage twice. The fame of Shihtou Temple (Stony Temple), or Tailao Temple (Thai Workers’ Temple), thus rapidly spread, and it has become a new tourist attraction in Tianliao.
