György Bernády was mayor of Târgu Mureș in 1902-1912 and 1926-1929. He may be refered to by the locals as the town builder for obvious reasons.
He is associated with his remarcable efforts of modernising the town in the 20th century. For example the downtown area took shape its current day form, among other things like introducing a sewage system, street lights, improvements in infrastructure, and major advancements in the educational, cultural and social aspects of town took place all under his mandates.
His statue was unveiled in 1994, and it is the work of Vince Bocskay.
