The medieval tiles at Byland Abbey, Yorkshire
England

The extensive ruins of an abbey complex built in the 12th century. It was founded as a Savigniac house in 1134 but was later absorbed by the Cistercian Order. The abbey prospered from wealthy patronage and income from sheep farming, wool sales and other commercial ventures until dissolved in 1538.

Prominent among the ruins is the west front of the huge abbey church, with three tall pointed lancet windows and the shattered lower rim of what was once a great rose window with a diameter of eight metres.
