The outer ward at Conwy Castle
Wales

Conwy Castle is one of four hugely impressive castles listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in North Wales. Along with Beaumaris, Caernarfon and Harlech, it was designed and built by Master James of St George as part of King Edward I's ambitious and ruinously expensive 'ring of iron' that encircled Snowdonia to isolate the native Welsh Princes.

The eight-towered castle and its 1.3km long fortified town walls were constructed in just four years between 1283 and 1287. The English king only stayed once, when trapped by a Welsh rebellion during the Christmas of 1294.
