The view from Fishguard Fort, Pembrokeshire
Wales

The remains of a late 18th century artillery fort, built on Castle Point overlooking the eastern approach to Fishguard Harbour. The fort is famed for it's part in repelling the last invasion of Britain.

On 22 February 1797, a French invasion fleet entered the harbour. With ammunition in short supply, gunners at the fort fired a volley of blanks. This was enough to deter the invaders, who landed a few miles further down the coast at Carreg Wastad instead. They surrendered a few days later.

The fort was returned to action during WW2, with searchlight and machine-gun emplacements defending the port against German seaplanes.
