Viseu, Rua Direita, Rua das Escadinhas
Portugal

Rua Direita is the main commercial artery in the city of Viseu. With about 500m in length, it was 2000 years ago, in the Roman period, the main road axis of the Roman city, Cardus Maximus. In medieval times it was designated as Rua das Tendas, as it is, as today, the main commercial street in the medieval village. In the 15th century, its name was changed to Rua Direita, as it directly connected two of the city gates, the extinct São José gate and the Porta dos Cavaleiros gate. Throughout the street, townhouses, manor houses, Manueline windows and countless commercial stores are visible, making it possible even today to feel the soul and spirit of the people who gave it life over almost two thousand years of history.

Inside the medieval walls, Rua Direita, halfway up the hillside, was the “most direct route to the citadel”. Narrow and winding, contrary to its name, Rua Direita had great commercial activity, being known as “Rua das Tendas“. It has several interesting buildings from the 16th and 18th centuries, the most notable of which is the Solar dos Treixedos.

Rua Direita is a good example of adaptation with municipal intervention. Transformed into a pedestrian street several years ago, new floors, signage, public lighting, etc. were experimented there to improve comfort and preserve vitality, which remains strong
