Water Delivery Systems Water Channels And Aqueducts Erdemli Vr Mersin 13f
Turkey
The water systems of Elaiussa Sebaste, located about 10 km to the point the Lamas River disembogues into the Mediterranean within the borders of Limonlu Neighborhood of Erdemli District, and the antique city of Korykos, 6 km to the southwest of the former, are dated to Roman and Early Byzantine Periods. Including these two, Lamas River met the water needs of many settlements (Olba, Diocaesareia) in the area. It flows down from its source in Bolkar Mountains in the central part of the Taurus Mountains. The river joins the springs in Aksıfat and Sarıaydın. Water taken from the Lamas River into the channel dug on rock around Limonlu Neighborhood at an elevation of 100 from ground level was delivered initially to Elaiussa Sebaste, then to Korykos and maybe beyond that point through eight aqueducts that were built in the streambed in an ascending order along the shore. The water system comprises galleries dug on the bedrock, watercourses made on rock ground either by digging or bonding walls and several aqueducts. Some of these remains can be viewed on the north of the way while driving past the site on Mersin-Silifke highway.
