Located at the junction of Tianliao, Neimen and Cishan, Yinding Mountain consists of hard yellow-brown sandstone. It is an exotic terrane in contrast to the surrounding shale formation. The long-term differential erosion results in a prominent independent terrane that looks like a horse head from afar. As a result, this huge terrane is named “Matou Mountain” (which literally means Horsehead Mountain). As it resembles the shape of a silver ingot from another angle, it is also called “Yinding Mountain” (which literally means Silver Ingot Mountain).
