Alta Mine (exterior)
California

At the bottom of the large tailings pile of the Alta Mine west of Smith River, California.  The copper mine dates back to the Civil War era & was one of the chief copper mines in the region.  The Low Divide Road passes nearby, once the site of the town of Altaville, a stage coach stop as the current road was an old wagon road connecting Crescent City to the mining town of Jacksonville, Oregon via a long windy approach through the Klamath Mountains.  Altaville fluorished between 1863 & 1865 but as the Civil War ended & the need for copper dwindled, the town died with it.
