Anchorage Alley Mural
Alaska

Downtown Anchorage seems to be awash with murals appearing on both grandiose and humble buildings. In the alleyway between 4th and 5th Avenues, murals depicting various Alaska themes appear behind dumpsters and parked cars. If you try parking there, say, to make a panorama of the artwork, an animated man may emerge from the door behind the elaborate steel gate and explain to you that parking is not allowed in the alley. That man would be Richard Zeigler, acknowledged Alaskan Character, former mayoral candidate, shoeshine man, and creator of the murals pictured. He is also a leatherworker, storyteller, furrier and inventor. In other words, someone you might expect to find in Alaska. If you need an interpretation of the artwork, he would be the man to ask.
