Alpine Lake (west), Sawtooth National Wilderness, Idaho, USA
Sawtooth National Wilderness

Alpine Lake is located on the northern end of the Sawtooth National Wilderness Area, Custer County, Idaho, USA.  The lake sits at 7,837 feet (2,389m) above sea-level and is a 4 mile hike from the nearest trailhead, which is Iron Creek Campground.  Iron Creek Campground is 5 miles (by road) from the town of Stanley, Idaho.  The 4 mile hike is on a well maintained hiking trail and has an elevation change of 1,100 feet (335m).

This image was taken on September 29, 2011 from the hiking trail on the hillside west of the lake and about 450 feet (137m) above it.  Alpine Lake is approximately 1,600 feet (488m) long and 730 feet (223m) wide and has a shoreline distance of about 0.92 miles (1.47km).  At the southern end of the lake stands 9,861 foot (3005m) Alpine Peak (pictured).

Winters are harsh at Alpine Lake, which remains ice and snow covered over half the year.  The best time for visiting in summer weather is August through October.  There are a number of very nice camping sites around this lake.
