Church Rock, San Juan County, Utah, USA
Utah

This approximately 200 foot (61m) tall column of sandstone protruding from the desert floor in southeastern Utah, USA, is commonly referred to as Church Rock.  The name comes partly due to the looks of the monolith and because a religious group, the Home of the Truth Utopian Community, attempted to hollow the rock out to make a church out of it back in the 1930's.  A 16 foot (4.9m) by 24 foot (7.3m) doorway about 15 feet (4.6m) deep at the south base of the rock is all that resulted from the effort.

The monolith is about 820 feet (250m) long and 265 feet (81m) wide and has a parameter of about 1,800 feet (549m).  Church Rock is easily visible and impossible to miss in daylight hours as it's just 1,200 feet (366m) off U.S. Highway 191.  The property is privately owned and fenced and usually gated off from casual visitors but there is a turnout which usually hosts a tourist or two taking pictures from the Highway.

The closest town to Church Rock is Monticello, Utah, which is about 14 miles (22.5km) to the south.
