Conimbriga, Public Baths, Natatio
Portugal

Public Baths. In the most monumental public establishment in the city, if the bather in Conimbriga intended to consummate his daily bathing ritual, he would head to the street to the north of the baths and enter through the large door that gave direct access to a wide area (859 m2) ) of rectangular plan occupied in the center by the great natatio, of 15.90 m by 10.75 m with seven steps of access to its interior. He went through this “esplanade” to the porticada area and could choose between two doors to the frying pan, where he would undress and leave his belongings in the niches that are reconstituted on the south wall of this room. This environment would have the dual function of frying pan and apodia. In this room you could choose the right (West) or left (East) door and enter the rectangular tepidarium, and after passing through the warm environment, you could choose between entering the caldário itself or the laconicum that is located to the east of the tepidarium. This laconicum, similar in structure to the thermal spas on the wall, but with monumental dimensions, is inserted in an internal circle of 9 m, decorated with four exedras of semi-circular plant whose diameters are irregular. Diametrically opposite the laconicum, you would find a second tepidarium of circular plant, with 6.46 m of inner diameter.

If he chose to enter the caldário directly, the bather would have a rectangular room flanked by two hot water blades, where he could bathe. Finally, it should travel in reverse the entire longitudinal space of the thermal sector to access the large pool and bathe in water at room temperature again. From the natatio, through a portico located to the west and down a monumental staircase, to the lecture, where you could certainly enjoy the impressive landscape.
