Basteja Boulevard was laid during the demolition of the city walls in 1858; running in parallel to the City Canal it separates the Canal and the park at the Bastion Hill from Old Riga. Smilsu (Sand) Street was the widest and most important street in Old Riga in the 13-17th centuries, following the Great Sand Road outside of the city.
