Sawtooth National Wilderness

Cradle Lake is located on the northern end of the Sawtooth National Wilderness Area, Custer County, Idaho, USA.  The lake sits at 8,609 feet (2,624m) above sea-level and is a 5 mile (8km) hike from the nearest trailhead, which is Stanley Lake Campground.  Stanley Lake Campground is 8 miles (by road) from the town of Stanley, Idaho.  The first 3 of the 5 hiking miles are on a well maintained hiking trail.  The total elevation change of the hike is 2,085 feet (636m).  The last trail-less 2 miles of the hike are not difficult but account for 835 feet (255m) of the total ascent.

This image was taken on October 18, 2011 from the west shoreline.  Cradle Lake is approximately 390 feet (119m) long and 270 feet (82m) wide and has a shoreline distance of about 1,100 feet (335m).  The lake is surrounded by 4 mountain peaks above 9,100 feet (2,774m) high, including McGown Peak at 9,860 feet (3,005m).

Harsh winters keep Cradle Lake ice and snow covered over half the year.  The best time for visiting in summer weather is August through October.
