Death of a Camphor
California

On August 22, 2012, the city had the old camphor tree at 18th and Capitol chopped down.  Planted in 1886, and 126 years old, it wasn't the oldest tree in town; but it was big, majestic, and people liked it.  The tree had verticillium wilt, a fungal disease and probably would have become hazardous if it hadn't been cut down.
