Donner Pass, in the Sierra Nevada mountains of northern California, viewed from the Rainbow Bridge parking lot.
Donner Pass is named for the fated Donner party of pioneers that set out in 1848 from Illinois to California. The pass now represents the most important transmontane route (rail and highway) connecting San Francisco with Reno. It lies within Tahoe National Forest with the Donner Memorial State Park nearby.
The section from Donner Summit to Donner Lake across the Rainbow Bridge is considered one of the most scenic pieces of highway in the country.
