Glasgow, Red Road Flats
Scotland

Night view of the Red Road Flats in Glasgow: At the time of their construction in 1964-1969 the Red Road Flats were the tallest residential buildings in Western Europe. The design by architect Sam Bunton was an unusual one for the time, being the only steel framed high rise buildings in Glasgow. Heralded as the solution to the chronic overcrowding in the area at the time, problems with this type of housing became quickly apparent with the lifts often not working, isolating the people and losing the sense of community between rarely seen neighbours.
