Hell Roaring Lake, Sawtooth National Wilderness, Idaho, USA
Sawtooth National Wilderness

Hell Roaring Lake is located on the eastern side of the Sawtooth National Wilderness Area, Custer County, Idaho, USA.  The lake sits at 7,420 feet (2,262m) above sea-level and is a 2 mile (3.2km) hike from the nearest 4-wheel drive road running up Hell Roaring Canyon.  The entire hike is on a well maintained hiking trail.  The total elevation change of the hike is only 200 feet (61m).

This image was taken on October 28, 2011 from the southeast shoreline.  Hell Roaring Lake is approximately 3,000 feet (914m) long and 1000 feet (305m) wide and has a shoreline distance of about 1.5 miles (2.4km).  The unique peak called the Finger of Fate (about 9,770 feet, 2,978m) can be seen to the west.

The best time for visiting in summer weather is August through October.  Because of the easy access, this lake is frequently visited by hikers and equestrian visitors.
