Heritage. Krekhiv. Monastery of the Fathers Basilian.
Ukraine

The founders of the monastery of the monastery are the monks of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra Joel and Sylvester. They are still in the 1590's settled in a cave cut in a rock in 12 km from the city of Zholkva. Over time, the monks became more, with the support of Stanislaus Zolkiewski, they built a church near the cave. Peter and Paul, and later the Church of the Transfiguration and the Trinity Church. Here, the bell tower and cells of the monks were erected. From the 1660s, with the support of King Michael Vyshnevetsky, the monastery was surrounded by large fortress walls that locked four tall towers. A lot of people were saved on its walls, especially during the attacks of the Tatars. During the siege of 1672 the monastery defended the young Ivan Mazepa. Several times in 1698, Peter I came to the monastery, who was in Jolkva and Rava-Russkaya, concluding an agreement with King August II on joint action against the Swedes in the future Northern War. In 1721, the Krehov Monastery became Greek Catholic. Since that time, its religious significance has become even more intense. From wooden it is reconstructed on stone. The northern entrance gate, the bell tower, the oldest part of the monastery building appear. Between 1721 and 1751 a new stone church of St. Nicholas was built. In the early 1990s, she was re-consecrated to the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The monastery was famous for its miraculous icons, which in Krekhov had four: three icons of the Virgin (one of the Verhrat) and the icon of St. Nicholas the Great. There was also a monastery library - it numbered more than 400 books, with a large archive. However, in time the monastery suffered many troubles. He was plundered by Poles, Austrians, and Bolsheviks. In 1949 it was closed, and in its buildings an orphanage was placed, later a boarding school for mentally retarded children. In 1963, the Krekhovskiy monastery complex was included in the list of architectural monuments of Ukraine, which are under state protection.
