"La Ramee" Abbey - Glimes - Belgium

The origins of the abbey of "La Ramée" remain obscure, we do not know the exact date of foundation. Like abbey, La Ramee was independent but was under

the spiritual tutelage of the great abbey of Villers. It counted no less than six blissful mainly from the bourgeoisie of Brabant or Liege.
The nuns or "ladies" were living around the monastery for celebrate the offices and for do some little jobs. A scriptorium famous for calligraphy and illumination
is documented in La Ramee from the thirteenth century. The community led by an abbess, also included "converse" sisters employed to physical tasks.
In the eighteenth century, under Austrian domination, the abbesses have developed a teaching activity. The abbey was declared a national asset in 1796.
The school was removed and the Cistercian evicted. The domain, divided into several lots, was sold in 1799. Since 1903, a part of the area is owned at Ladies of the
Congregation of the Sacred Heart. The farm was acquired in 1990 by the real estate society "La Ramée" who wish implanted a vast restoration project and cultural center.
