sunset at Lotharpfad, Schwarzwaldhochstrasse
Baden-Wuerttemberg

Two days after christmas eve in 1999 the storm Lothar swept over europe and caused major damage in France, Switzerland and southern Germany. Wind speeds up to 250 km/h broke almost all trees in large areas in the black forest.

Most of the wood was cut but about 10 hectare near the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse where left in it's original state. Later it was made accessible with wooden planks and steps. This path is called Lotharpfad (Lothar path).

After 11 years the forest comes back to the storm damage area. The old logs degrade and the young trees overgrow anything. Currently (Oct 2010) the google maps and google earth images still show the original damage.

* The Lotharpfad is a project of the Naturschutzzentrum Ruhestein and the Kreisforstamt Freudenstadt (german page)
