McCaig's Folly (Tower) , Oban , Scotland
Scotland

Looking like a replica of the Colliseum in Rome , McCaig's Tower (Folly as it is more popularly known) sits above the town of Oban .

Built in 1897 by John Stuart McCaig (a local banker) , the tower was intended to be a lasting memorial to the McCaig family .

At a cost of £5,000 , the tower is actually incomplete . A central tower and statues of the McCaig family at the entrance to the tower were never done .

The tower came about as a job creation scheme as there was a high unemployment in the area at the time .

The tower has a fabulous viewpoint which looks over Oban and the islands beyond . It is a worthwhile walk up the hill to see this .
