Museum, mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba


Located in the heart of the city

August 3, 1903 in Monastir was born the first president of independent Tunisia, Habib Bourguiba, who was driving the country 41 years. In 1956 he freed the country from French colonization. Since 1956, based on the European model of society, he holds a number of reforms in the country: compulsory secondary education, social protection, the prohibition of polygamy, equal rights for women and men, etc.

The mausoleum is decorated with four carved domes: one where there is a stone tomb of the president, covered with gold, while three others are painted in green in honor of his father, mother and first wife of the president. Near two minarets of gray marble, with golden domes. Art tiles add a special charm.

In 1963, the  was built mosque Bourguiba (modeled Hammoud Pasha Mosque in Tunis), the prayer hall which can accommodate up to a time thousands of worshipers.
