Pulpit Point, Sawtooth National Wilderness, Idaho, USA
Sawtooth National Wilderness

Pulpit Point is a natural rock monument on the north end of Pulpit Lake in the Sawtooth National Wilderness Area, Custer County, Idaho, USA.  The monument stands about 100 feet (30m) above Pulpit Lake at 8,675 feet (2,644m) above sea-level.

This image was taken on October 18, 2011 from the top of Pulpit Point.  Visible from here are Pulpit Lake, Stanley Lake (off in the distance) and McGown Peak at 9,860 feet (3,005m).  The town of Stanley, Idaho would have been visible if it were not for the fog in the valley.

To get to Pulpit Point requires a 4.5 mile (7.2km) hike from the nearest trailhead, which is Stanley Lake Campground.  Stanley Lake Campground is 8 miles (by road) from the town of Stanley, Idaho.  The first 3 of the 4.5 hiking miles are on a well maintained hiking trail.  The total elevation change of the hike is 2,150 feet (655m).  The last trail-less mile and a half of the hike is not difficult but accounts for 900 feet (294m) of the total ascent.  The last 100 feet (30m) is a very steep scramble in the rocks on the east side of the monument but can be safely done without climbing equipment.
