Replica of FARMAN 4 aircraft at the Aviation festival in Riga
Riga

This training airplane, constructed by Henri Farmane in 1910, was considered the safest airplane of its kind in the world.

Replica is built by Latvian enthusiasts from original, century-old plans. Tthey had spent 15 years scouring archives in Latvia and neighboring Russia for plans of the plane, which was designed by French aviator and aircraft designer Henri Farman.

They then spent three years building the 560-kilo (1,234-pound) plane, which has an original 1912 US-made Curtis motor.
With a maximum speed of 74 kilometres per hour (46 miles per hour), the Farman 4 was the fastest plane of its era. Originally produced in France, it rapidly gained hold elsewhere, including Tsarist Russia, which ruled Latvia at the time.

More About Riga

Originated from a small fishermen village, for centuries Riga has been an important part of the trade chain between Russia and Western Europe. A lively crossroad of cultures and backgrounds for over 800 years, the historical centre of Riga has accumulated an impressive cultural baggage and today is justly included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
