Sand sculpture park - Magic Sand Riga 2011
Riga

Visitors  of the creative sand sculpture park in Riga look at the sculptures created by the artists, are inspired by them and try their own hand at sand sculpture. Both big and little visitors are building sandcastles in the park.

The central exhibition consists of eleven sand sculptures, created by artists from Latvia and abroad. How does loose, runny sand become dense, hard sculpture? Visitors were able to watch this secret process from 18th-26th July when, in front of their very eyes, arose the eleventh sculpture. Believe it or not, it was a scandal!
In the master workshop visitors become sculptors themselves. Just like professionals, they choose the sand, think of their subject, receive a set of tools and sculpting can begin! Everyone is invited to make a sand sculpture.
There are also other master workshops in the sand park. Every day wind chime formation, the creation of sand mandalas, sand paintings in a bottles and soap boiling. Dunno or “Nezinītis”, who rushes to the children, on Sundays, with special riddle and puzzle activities… and so on, more and more.
And, of course – the Big Sandbox. Step right in! – both children and their parents are invited. Bake a sand cake, build a castle, dig a hole in Latvia’s largest sandbox.
Try out also a completely new sand tool – sand shaper “The Wilisphere”. It was invented by the Dutch artist Wilfred Stijger, to form a perfect sphere. He recommends that his new tool be tried not only by artists but also by children of all ages, up to 99 years. And, believe it or not, this is happening in our creative sand sculpture park.
And, lastly, it is possible to take splendid photographs with a view towards Old Riga. Definitely, don’t forget your camera! The park attendants will show you the perfect photo location – in the big palm of the central sculpture. Your portrait will be flaked by the towers of Old Riga. One of us will gladly take the picture if you come alone or wish to include your whole family.

More About Riga

Originated from a small fishermen village, for centuries Riga has been an important part of the trade chain between Russia and Western Europe. A lively crossroad of cultures and backgrounds for over 800 years, the historical centre of Riga has accumulated an impressive cultural baggage and today is justly included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
